![]() ![]() Venom released two albums in 19, Welcome To Hell and Black Metal respectively. ![]() At this time this new style wasn’t even called thrash metal, it was simply called speed metal. Bands such as Deep Purple and The Rolling Stones were their biggest inspirations, according to Conrad “Cronos” Lant, their vocalist/bassist. Venom’s own influences came from the hardcore punk & rock scenes. They played a style of music that was incredibly fast, which initially attracted critics from their peers, who suggested that they played so fast because they couldn’t play at all. The roots of the impending thrash metal movement were planted by Venom in the early 1980’s. Some people consider heavy metal was born in the late 50’s and not in 1970 when Black Sabbath released “Black Sabbath”. And I say that because, as with any genre, it’s hard to pinpoint exactly where and when it was formed. Of all places I expected the earliest indications of thrash metal, it wasn’t in Newcastle, England. ![]() Thrash metal’s roots can be traced back to Newcastle… This time around we are looking at the fast and furious sub-genre of metal called Thrash Metal!
